In this flat land, a bicycle is an ideal means of getting around, and cities have safe cycle lanes on busy roads. Bikes are best rented at outlets near most railway stations, called Rijwiel shops. These shops are generally open long hours every day, and the bikes are invariably new and well maintained. Rates are EUR 6.50-EUR 8.40, and you must show ID and pay a deposit of EUR 50. Cheaper bikes have back-pedal brakes and no gears. Other local rental centers can be found in the regional Gouden Gids (Yellow Pages), under Fietsen en Bromfietsen.
