Oslo was founded by Harald Hardråde ("Hard Ruler") in 1048, and the earliest settlements were near what is now Bispegata, a few blocks behind Oslo S Station. Ruins are all that's left of the city's former religious center: the Korskirke (Cross Church, Egedesgt. 2), a small stone church dating from the end of the 13th century; Olavs Kloster (Olav's Cloister, St. Halvards pl. 3), built around 1240 by Dominican monks; and Olavskirken (Olav's Church, Egedesgt. 4), remnants of a 13th-century stone church.
