Before the Parque das Nações site was developed, Lisbon could count its postmodern architectural triumphs on one finger – namely the gigantic pink-and-blue Amoreiras, a striking commercial-and-residential complex west of Parque Eduardo VII. Designed by Tomás Taveira in 1985 and visible from just about everywhere in town, the gleaming complex still turns heads; inside, there's a huge shopping center, a 10-screen movie theater, a food court – even a chapel. On weekends it seems all of Lisbon turns out to roam the corridors. Just across the road, you will now find the tower block housing the massive Dom Pedro hotel, whose top floors have incredible views over the city.
