O Escondidinho

O Escondidinho Review

In business since 1934, this popular restaurant opened during the first great Portuguese Colonial Exhibition that took place in the Palácio de Cristal. Its long history is evident in the entrance, where hand-painted tiles from the 17th century announce a country-house decor. The menu has French-influenced dishes as well as creative Douro dishes. Steak is prepared no less than six ways (try the smoky version with truffles), and the sole—served with capers or port wine—is always deliciously fresh. The pudim flan (egg custard) and toucinho do céu (a similar dessert, but with almond and egg yolks) are excellent.
