Kilmartin House Museum

Kilmartin House Museum Review

For an exceptional encounter with early Scottish history, start at this museum 8 mi north of Crinan and then explore some of the more than 300 ancient monuments within a 6-mi radius of Kilmartin village. Exhibits provide information about the stone circles and avenues, burial mounds, and carved stones dating from the Bronze Age and earlier that are scattered thickly nearby; an audiovisual presentation helps set you on your way. Although the museum is closed in January and February, it holds some events during those months. Nearby Dunadd Fort, a rocky hump rising out of the level ground between Crinan and Kilmartin, was once the capital of the early kingdom of Dalriada, founded by the first wave of Scots who migrated from Ireland around AD 500. Clamber up the rock to see a basin, a footprint, and an outline of a boar carved on the smooth upper face of the knoll.
