Bicycling

For the strong and prepared biker, there is perhaps no better way to see the Northern Highlands landscapes than by pedaling over them. There are a number of lovely, unclassified lanes that wind through the hills and along coastal cliffs. Although some of these narrow, sometimes unpaved, roads are seldom used by motor vehicles, the occasional car may come along and force you onto the shoulder. You'll likely find yourself on main roads, contending with traffic, at least some of the time, so avoid taking a bike trip in high season (July and August). High-visibility clothing is advised.

Fishing

The possibilities for fishing are endless here, as a glance at the loch-covered map of Sutherland suggests. Brown trout and salmon are abundant. You can fish from the banks of Loch Assynt, 5 mi east of Lochinver, from April through October 15. Loch Garve, 4 mi west of Strathpeffer, is another favorite fishing spot; the season there is from March 15 through October 6. Boat fishing is also popular on Loch Maree, southeast of Gairloch and north of Poolewe, from May through October. Fishing permits are available at local post offices, shops, and hotels.

Landscape

Perhaps the most dramatic scenery in Scotland can be found in the Northern Highlands, Skye, and the Western Isles. Skye's landscape ranges from the lush, tree-lined road leading to Sleat to the ragged outline of the Cuillin Hills. On Lewis and the Uists expect vast swaths of golden sand set against blue bays, or -- when the weather is rough -- giant waves crashing against the rocks. For untamed wilderness, Durness and Cape Wrath cannot be matched.
