Scottish Crannog Centre

Scottish Crannog Centre Review

Here's your chance to travel back 5,000 years to a time when the local inhabitants of this area started building defensive homesteads, known as crannogs, on wooden piles standing in lochs. They were approachable only by narrow bridges that could be easily defended. This practice continued until as late as the 17th century. Archaeologists have found many remains of crannogs in lochs throughout Scotland. One of the best preserved was found several feet under the surface of Loch Tay, off the north shore at Fearnan, and it's now possible to visit an accurate replica built on the south shore. An exhibition gives details about crannog construction and the way of life in and around crannogs. The Crannog Centre is just west of Aberfeldy, on the southern shore of Loch Tay.
