The Central Highlands: Places to Explore

Stirling

Stirling is one of Britain's great historic towns. An impressive proportion of the Old Town walls remain and can be seen from Dumbarton Road, as soon as you step outside the tourist information center. Its castle, built on a steep-sided plug of rock, dominates the landscape. From its esplanade there is a commanding view of the surrounding valley plain (called the Carse of Stirling). The guns on the castle battlements are a reminder of the military advantage to be gained from its position.
