Getting Here and Around
You can arrive in Scotland by plane, train, or boat, and there are many places to disembark. Most international flights arrive at Glasgow International Airport (GLA). Edinburgh (EDI), and Prestwick (PIK) Airports are much smaller and handle mainly European and charter flights.
Scotland is not a large country: the entire United Kingdom (including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) is about the size of Oregon, so you're less likely to fly. The country's train and bus systems are extensive and relatively well maintained; for major towns and cities, there is generally no need to rent a car. To see castles and historic houses—which may be far from towns—you may have to rent a car or join a tour. Driving is on the left, and gas (petrol) is expensive at $7-$8 a U.S. gallon.
