Plaza de España

Plaza de España Review

Mérida's main square, the Plaza de España, adjoins the northwestern corner of the Alcazaba and is highly animated both day and night. The plaza's oldest building is a 16th-century palace, now a Meliá hotel (it's a bit noisy, and there are better places to stay). Behind the palace stretches Mérida's most charming area, with Andalusian-style white houses shaded by palms, in the midst of which stands the Arco de Trajano, part of a Roman city gate.
