Open since 1787, the haughty grande dame of Stockholm is more a Swedish institution than a seat of gastronomic distinction. Thick carpeting, shiny polished brass, and handsome carved-wood chairs and tables fill what is almost certainly one of Europe's most amazing dining rooms. The crystal chandeliers are said to be Sweden's finest, and the high windows on the south side have magnificent views of the Royal Palace. The restaurant is famed for its seasonal smorgasbord, offered at Christmas. Coveted selections include marinated herring, reindeer, elk, and ice cream with cloudberry sauce. In summer the veranda opens as the Operabryggan Café, facing Kungsträdgården and the waterfront. Around the corner in the same building is the restaurant's backficka, a pleasantly active bar/restaurant with a less expensive menu.
