The hotel industry of this Mediterranean region of Switzerland capitalizes on its natural assets, with lakeside views of Lago Maggiore and Lago di Lugano, and swimming pools and terraces that pay homage to the omnipresent sun. As Ticino is at its best in spring and fall, and packed with sun seekers in summer, many hotels close down for the winter. Tourist offices often publish lists of those remaining open, so if you're planning to come in low season—and even in January the lake resorts can be balmy—check carefully.

Keep in mind that most hotels are not air-conditioned, in spite of hot spells in July and August. Vacation resorts don't depend on the demipension (half board) system like many of their mountain counterparts, but arrangements can be made. And remember, there are several festivals in all towns in summer, notably in Locarno and Lugano—so expect full hotels. Otherwise, the Ticino is moderately well visited throughout most of the year, except in late fall and after the Christmas/New Year period.
