Zürich has a new pinnacle of hotel luxury—or should we say a new old pinnacle: this 1899 building, resplendent with towering turrets and timbered balconies, has been completely refurbished and is now flanked by two glass-and-steel wings that mirror the natural surroundings. Set atop the Zürichberg mountain, this sprawling resort hotel, which began life as a Victorian-era Kurhaus, has been given a minimalist makeover, mixing the original Corinthian capitals and crystal chandeliers of the original structure with the angular, less-is-more style of the modern wings. The sumptuous guest rooms, some with hardwood floors, are complemented by an extravagant in-house spa offering everything from soothing massages to plastic surgery. While the formal restaurant is very elegant, the stark whiteness and bead curtains of the more casual one downstairs evoke a cafeteria to some eyes. Regardless, the food is excellent.
