Ulu Cami (Great Mosque)

Ulu Cami (Great Mosque) Review

In the center of the old city is the Ulu Cami, one of the oldest mosques in Anatolia. Though the present form dates from the 12th century, in an older form the structure served as the Byzantine basilica of St Thomas; its colonnades and columns are made from bits and pieces of earlier Roman and Byzantine buildings. Note the Arabic-style flat-roofed and rectangular plan, closely resembling the great Ummayid Mosque of Damascus and unlike the square-shape and domed mosques common in Turkey.
