Istanbul Sights

Istanbul Modern Review

A converted warehouse on the shores of the Bosphorus showcases modern painting, sculpture, photography, and works in other media from Turkey and around the world. The permanent collection tells the story of modern Turkish art from its late-19th-century Orientalist beginnings up through the present day, while a top-notch program of temporary exhibits features significant local and international contemporary artists. A guided tour (free on Thursday at 3 pm and 5 pm; call in advance to confirm availability and make a reservation; tours can be arranged on other days/times for 10 TL/person for groups of four or more) can give you a good introduction to the art scene in Turkey. The museum also has a gift shop, a small cinema, and a pleasant restaurant and café with beautiful views toward Topkapi Palace and the Sea of Marmara, along with good food that doesn't come cheap.
