Kordon Review

The waterfront promenade is the most fashionable section of town. It starts at the museum complex in Bahribaba Parki, in Alsancak, and stretches north along the busy harbor, past Konak Meydani and NATO's Southern Command headquarters. Along the strip are several good seafood restaurants and cafés, all with outdoor seating overlooking the Aegean sea. You can tour the area by fayton (horse-drawn carriages); carriages are stationed in the Cumhuriyet Meydani, steps from the beginning of Kordon.

Atatürk Müzesi. Along the Kordon is Izmir's small Atatürk Müzesi. The pale yellow Levantine house was presented to Atatürk as a gift and shows off photos and other mementoes of the founder of the Turkish Republic. Atatürk Cad., 248, Izmir, 35000. 232/464-8085. 3 TL. Tues.-Sun. 8:30-noon and 1-5.
