St. John Basilica

St. John Basilica Review

The emperor Justinian built the St. John Basilica over a 2nd-century tomb on Ayasoluk Hill, believed by many to have once held the body of St. John the Evangelist. Eleven domes formerly topped the basilica, which rivaled Istanbul's Aya Sofya (Haghia Sophia) in scale. The barrel-vaulted roof collapsed after a long-ago earthquake, but the church is still an incredible sight, with its labyrinth of halls and marble courtyards. It provides beautiful views both of Selçuk's castle and the Plain of Ephesus.
