The Apollo Smintheon

Fodor's Review:

The Apollo Smintheon is, as the name suggests, a temple dedicated to the god Apollo. It dates from the 2nd century BC. Smintheus -- one of the sun god's many names, meaning "killer of mice" -- alludes to a problem that Teucer, the town's founder, had with mice eating his soldiers' bowstrings. The temple has no great historical importance, but it does have some interesting carved pillars and is surrounded by wild pomegranate trees. If you arrive before sunset, watching the sun go down behind the three marble columns makes is well worth the trip here.

Apollo Smintheon is down the hill from the center of Gülpinar, which can be reached by bus from Çanakkale or by minibus from Ezine.
