By Taxi

Taxi rides within the Zona Hotelera cost $6 to $10; between the Zona Hotelera and El Centro, they run $8 and up; and to the ferries at Punta Sam or Puerto Juárez, fares are $15 to $20 or more. Prices depend on distance, your negotiating skills, and whether you pick up the taxi in front of a hotel or save a few dollars by going onto the avenue to hail one yourself (look for green city cabs). Most hotels list rates at the door; confirm the price with your driver before you set out. Some drivers ask for such outrageously high fares it's not worth trying to bargain with them. Just let them go and flag down another cab. If you lose something in a taxi or have questions or a complaint, call the Sindicato de Taxistas. But don't be surprised if your lost item isn't found.

On Isla Mujeres

Taxis line up by the ferry dock around the clock. Fares run $2 to $3 from the ferry to hotels along Playa Norte. A taxi to the south end of the island should be about $5. You can also hire a taxi for an island tour for about $15 an hour. Always establish the price before getting into the cab. If it seems too high, decline the ride; you'll always be able to find another. If you think you've been overcharged or mistreated, contact the taxi office.
