Northern Belize Places

Lamanai

Getting Here and Around

There are several ways to get here. One option is to drive on the mostly unpaved road from Orange Walk Town. Turn west at the Orange Walk fire station. From here go to Yo Creek, then southwest to San Felipe Village, a total of 24 mi (39 km). In San Felipe go straight for another 12 mi (19 km) to reach the ruins. Another route by road is via Shipyard—the unpaved road to Shipyard is just south of Orange Walk. The best way to approach the ruins, however, is by boat, which takes about an hour and a half from Orange Walk. Boats leave around 9 am from the Tower Hill bridge over the New River on the Northern Highway, about 6 mi (10 km) south of Orange Walk. The cost is BZ$80 per person. If you are staying at Lamanai Outpost, the lodge has its own boats to take you up the river, departing from a dock just south of the dock where the other boats depart. Some hotels in Orange Walk Town arrange Lamanai tours, with pickup and drop-off at the hotel, also for around BZ$80 per person. You can also take a 15-minute charter plane trip from Belize City, around BZ$400 for up to four persons.
