No wonder budget-minded travelers flock to this clean, simple hotel on the beach: air-conditioned rooms with private baths and balconies facing the ocean go for around BZ$100, while the original rooms with fans and private bath, facing the street, are BZ$70 for a double plus tax. Singles with shared baths start at BZ$40 plus tax off-season. Book ahead, as Ruby's is often full. Try the breakfast burritos at the hotel's little restaurant, Ruby's Café, which opens at 5 am for the fishing and diving crowd.

    Budget Means BUDGET

    If you're an experienced "rough" traveller and can do without mod-cons Ruby's is a great deal. Those who require a bit more in the way of amenities or cleanliness, or are travelling with children might do well to consider another of the reasonably priced options available. During our time in San Pedro we spent more time in our room than we had initially anticipated - poor weather - and found the sand on the floor, weak water pressure and dubious particleboard walls to be a bit wearisome. Had we been out and about all day every day though, as originally planned, I doubt we would have noticed!
