Blue Creek Review

Don't miss Blue Creek, a beautiful stretch of river dotted with turquoise swimming holes. A path up the riverbank leads to dramatic caves. The entrance to Hokeb Ha Cave is fairly easy to explore on your own (although you should be a strong swimmer), but others require a guide or a tour. International Zoological Expeditions, a Connecticut-based student travel and research organization, has established a jungle lodge at Blue Creek, with seven rustic cabañas and a restaurant. To visit this part of Blue Creek, you need an okay from the IZE Blue Creek Rainforest Lodge (508/655-1461 in the U.S. or ize2belizeaol.com). ITMB at SunCreek Lodge, TIDE Tours, and other tour operators offer trips to Blue Creek, providing lights and other necessary equipment. Don't swim in the river at night—a highly poisonous snake called the fer-de-lance likes to take nocturnal dips.
