Gales Point Review

The small Creole village of Gales Point, population about 500, set beside the lagoon, is home to several drum makers, including Boombay Andrewin, who gives Creole-style drumming lessons (about BZ$16 an hour) at the Maroon Creole Drum School. Emmeth Young, a founder of the drum school and a long-time Gales Point drummer and drum maker, has moved to San Pedro Columbia, Toledo.

Sugar Shack. Artist Jill Burgess runs this crafts, snack, and gift shop next to the Maroon Creole Drum School. Handmade drums of coconut wood, cashew wood, or mahogany cost BZ$100-BZ$800. Gales Point Village, Dangriga. 603/6051. Hrs vary but generally Mon.-Sat. 9-5.
