Villa Alegre Review
A visit here is like coming to stay with dear friends who just happen to have a really terrific house on one of the most scenic beaches in Costa Rica. Owned by congenial and helpful Californians Barry and Suzye Lawson, this homey but sophisticated Spanish-style bed-and-breakfast overlooks a small forest reserve that's great for bird-watching. Langosta Beach is visible from the terrace, the pool, and from a romantic lookout bench. Although the beach is a little rocky, soft sand and swimmable water are just a few minutes' walk south. Spacious rooms, villas, and casitas each have a theme, furnished with souvenirs from the Lawsons' international travels, including Japan, Russia, and Guatemala. The bright and cheerful Mexican honeymoon suite has a Frida Kahlo-esque canopy bed and a huge, luxurious outdoor bathroom/patio. The villas have kitchens, living rooms with several futons, and terraces overlooking the forest. Lavish breakfasts are served family-style at 8:30 on a terrace overlooking the small pool—they're a chance to meet other guests and to ask the Lawsons for travel advice or other help, which they happily provide. There's also a huge library of books on hand, and a comprehensive collection of local tour brochures and information. The hotel often plans and hosts weddings; ceremonies take place at a huge boulder on the beach dubbed Marriage Rock.
