Laguna del Lagarto Lodge Review

At one of Costa Rica's smaller and more remote eco-lodges, rustic cabins with single beds are surrounded by a 1,250-acre rain forest near the Nicaraguan border that gives shelter to 350 bird species and counting. Buffet-style meals are served on a patio with river and forest views. Rates include one guided walk on the 10 km (6 miles) of forest trails, a tour of the butterfly garden, and use of canoes. Recommended extras include horseback riding and a boat trip up to the border on the San Carlos River. (Bring your passport, since the river is officially Nicaraguan territory.) Ask about transfers available (at extra cost) from various points, including San José. The knowledgeable personnel here speak German, in addition to the requisite English and Spanish.

    Laguna del Lagarto Lodge Review

    This trip during the week of Thanksgiving was strictly for bird watching and enjoying the rainforests rather than worring about great lodge accomodations. This lodge, tucked away in the far north of Costa Rica about 5 km from the Nicaraguan border turned out to be just fine. The rooms were quite spartan (definately no frills), but clean and served their needs. The food was typical Costa Rican cusine and quite good, with always plenty to eat, and the employees and manger of the lodge were very gracious and friendly,
    This is a great spot for observing Toucans, Parrots and other birdlife of the rainforest. My guide (private birding guide that I had arrainged for earlier) turned out to be very amiable and was truly fun to be with slogging through the forest. We managed to see some great birds including the Great Green Macaw and Great Curassow - both quite magnificent birds.
    I enjoyed this lodge very much (it had quite an international flavor, with guests from Canada, Germany, the USA, and England among others. Super fun time....
