Be a cowboy for a day, herding and riding the range, at this 1,235-acre hillside cattle ranch. Or hike mountain trails in search of wildlife and birds. The rambling, 60-year-old farmhouse where you bed down is made of wood that was shipped in from Puntarenas and then carried uphill on men's backs, before there were roads or cars in this area. The avocado-green hacienda has four simple but comfortable rooms that can accommodate up to 10 people; they share a modern bathroom with two solar-powered showers and toilets. A homey eat-in kitchen is equipped with a microwave, coffeemaker, stove, and fridge. A separate cabin sleeps three. Resident guides can take you on foot or horseback into the forest.
