Río Indio Lodge

Fodor's Review:

Near the small village of San Juan del Norte, in the midst of the Río Indio-Maíz Biological Reserve, is Nicaragua's first true ecotourism lodge, and it proffers a rustic luxury. Thatch-roof-covered walkways lead through the forest connecting the main building to your room, with hardwood floors and huge windows. All is well ventilated here despite the heat in this part of southern Nicaragua. Packages include van transport from San José to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, with continuation by boat another three hours up the Sarapiquí and San Juan rivers to the lodge. Or you can opt for air transport to Barra del Colorado with another hour's boat journey up the Río Colorado to the site. So tied is San Juan del Norte to its southern neighbor that the lodge's information offices and telephone numbers are in Costa Rica rather than Nicaragua.
