Nautical kitsch at its best, this dockside hotel has a ship-shaped restaurant ($-$$), complete with a billowy sail and a mermaid figurehead. This is definitely fisherman territory, with a pool table, loud music, and big TVs. Unexpectedly, the breakfast omelets may be the best in Costa Rica. The seaside theme carries through to spacious rooms, from shell-patterned bedspreads to shell-shaped hand soap. Rooms have two double beds, remote-controlled air-conditioning, and tile bathrooms with hot water (a rarity in these parts). The mattresses are a little soft, and you are at the mercy of adjoining neighbors and the thumping music from the bar, but things usually quiet down by 11 PM. The eccentric French owner designed a swimming pool in the shape of butterfly wings, plus a kids' pool and play area. After midnight you are warned not to leave your room to avoid a nasty encounter with the guard dogs.
