Here's a rare opportunity to explore La Amistad Park, which borders this 25,000-acre family estate, most of which is primary forest studded with rivers and waterfalls. The alpine-style lodge (currently being expanded) offers comfortable quarters, great home-cooked food, and the best cappuccino and espresso in the country, made from the estate's own organic coffee beans. Daylong guided hikes or horseback rides traverse the property's 57 km (35 mi) of trails. The really adventurous can take the "Feel Green" hiking tour, walking to four camps over the course of five days. The staff, including a cook, carries all your gear and food in the truck and meets you at each camp. The cabins are as rustic as it gets; the shared baths have only (very) cold water. But the wildlife and walks are beyond exhilarating and the food cooked in a wood-fire stove is simple but delicious. Bring along a really good sleeping bag for the cold mountain nights.
