Savegre Hotel, Natural Reserve & Spa Review
Famous for its miles of bird-watching trails and its expert guides, this once-rustic lodge has been upgraded to luxury, boasting cabin suites with handsome wood furnishings, crackling fireplaces, and deep bathtubs and a full-service, riverside spa. These were unthinkable luxuries back in the 1950s, when Don Efrain Chacón first bushwhacked his way through these mountains. Still run by his children and grandchildren, the main lodge has a big fireplace, a spacious bar, and a gift shop with lots of useful bird-watching items, including rain ponchos. Breakfast and lunch can be served on a sunny terrace frequented by hummingbirds. Homegrown trout is the restaurant's specialty. You can avoid the twisting drive by taking a bus to Km 80 on the Pan-American Highway and arranging to get a lift to the hotel ($25).
