Biking in Antigua and Western Highlands

Biking

The rolling hills that surround Antigua make for great mountain biking. Local agencies rent bikes as well as equipment like helmets and water bottles. Mayan Bike Tours (1 Av. Sur 15. 7832-3383) offers trips ranging from easy rides in a morning or afternoon to more challenging treks lasting several days. Old Town Outfitters (5 Av. Sur 12. 7832-4171. www.bikeguatemala.com) caters to a backpack crowd, but its trips are suitable for people of all ages. It also offers volcano hikes and rock-climbing excursions.

There's great mountain biking through the hills and villages surrounding Xela. Vrisa Bicicletas (15 Av. 3-64, Zona 1. 7761-3237) rents both on-road and off-road bikes by the day or week and has maps so you can take self-guided tours of the countryside.

For exploring the countryside you can rent a mountain bike at Moto Servicio Quiché (Av. de los Arboles at C. Principal) and pedal over to nearby villages.
