Hiking in Antigua and Western Highlands

Hiking

Antigua's best volcano expeditions are offered by Eco-Tours Chejos (3 C. Poniente 24. 7832-2657), whose friendly owner has climbed Volcán Pacaya more than 1,800 times. The prices are higher than most, but there are usually fewer people in each group. Sin Fronteras (5 Av. Norte 15A. 7832-1017. www.sinfront.com) will take you on a one-day trip to Pacayá or a two-day trip to Fuego or Acatenango. Voyageur (4 C. Oriente 14. 7832-4237) is a reputable outfitter with excursions to Pacaya. Adrenalina (5 Av. Norte 31. 7832-1108. www.adrenalinatours.com) also leads daily guided hikes to all four volcanoes.

Quetzaltrekkers (Casa Argentina, 12 Diagonal 8-67, Zona 1. 7761-5865. www.quetzaltrekkers.com) is a nonprofit company that supports three major social-service programs by coordinating truly unforgettable hiking trips. The three-day trek to Lago Atitlán and the two-day ascent of Volcán Tajamulco both pass through spectacular countryside and several remote villages.
