Safety and Precautions
Antigua is one of Guatemala's safest cities, and the streets around Parque Central are patrolled by the municipal and tourist police. Farther from the square you should walk in groups or take taxis after the sun goes down. Hotels and restaurants are always happy to call a taxi for you at night. Be careful in the countryside, where there have been some robberies. If you plan to tackle one of the nearby volcanoes, hire a reputable guide and ask what safety precautions the company takes. Under no circumstances should you hike the volcanoes without the safety of an escorted group tour.
