Dos Pilas Review

A three-hour hike from Sayaxché brings you to Dos Pilas. Recent archaeological finds here indicate that continual warfare may have caused an ecological imbalance that led to the collapse of the Mayan civilization. Most spectacular of the ancient structures found here is a limestone staircase covered with carvings that recount the battles the upstart ruler waged against his brother at Tikal. Unlike most other Mayan cities, this one was surrounded by a defensive wall.
