Banks and Currency Exchange

It's best to arrive at Isla Mujeres with pesos or exchange money at the "cambio" window at the Ultramar ferry dock in Cancún. On the island there are ATMs at the San Francisco Super Express store on the town square and at the HSBC across from the ferry port. Both machines tend to run out of money on weekends and holidays.

Island banks will no longer exchange U.S. dollars to Mexican pesos, but there are many "casa de cambio" (exchange houses) that will—in fact, they're the only option. Few places on Isla Mujeres, including banks, will accept traveler's checks, and a minority of establishments accept credit cards, mostly MasterCard and Visa. (Expect to pay an additional 5% service fee.)

There aren't any tours of the island itself; this is a place to explore at your own pace. Most "island tours" are actually trips around the island, including catamaran party boats or open-bar ferries.
