Once you get past its dull exterior, this high-rise turns out to have a bright and lively atmosphere. There's a subdued elegance to its marble-floored lobby and an irresistible cheerfulness to the skylighted inner courtyard -- filled with a restaurant and shops -- where long vines hang from the balconies of the surrounding rooms. Inside those rooms, the mood is muted -- done in basic colors (though a remodel begun in 2006 is brightening the color scheme) and helpful amenities like hair dryers, suit racks, and makeup mirrors. Each has a tiny terrace. The focus is on the outdoors, from the beautiful pool and beach to a sprawling list of recreational options, all facilitated by a helpful staff. There's a quality live show six nights a week and the hotel's Sanca Bar draws a nice crowd for dancing to Latin music. The "Distinctivo H" classification means the hotel's restaurant facilities meet a strict national standard.
