$-$$, Seafood, Marina Vallarta
Fodor's Review:
Extremely popular with locals, this large restaurant hums with activity and a varied, upbeat soundtrack with tunes by icons such as Bob Marley and Frank Sinatra. The menu is oddly translated -- tuna sashimi appears as atun fresco con salsa rasurada, or "tuna cut thick with shaved sauce, alone if there was fishing" (the latter meaning that it's only available if the fish was caught that day) -- indicating that this is a spot geared to locals, not tourists. The freshly caught, raw tuna, which is thicker than in U.S. sushi houses, but not too thick, is served in a shallow dish with soy sauce, micro-thin cucumber slices, sesame seeds, green onions, chili powder, and lime. Eat with tostadas until fit to burst. Avoid the scallop tostadas, as the shellfish is virtually raw. The ceviche, however, couldn't be better -- or fresher. There's a small storefront subsidiary in the parking lot at Plaza Marina; the charming original venue is behind Blockbuster Video in the Hotel Zone.
