¢-$, Mexican, Centro
Fodor's Review:
This little jewel is increasingly popular with budget travelers. Egg dishes and chilaquiles are served 9-11 AM, and an inexpensive daily lunch menu is served 2-5 PM. Slightly less than $5 gets you soup, a main dish, drink, homemade tortillas, and dessert. Office workers come in for takeout, or drift in between 6 and 10 PM for tacos, tortas (Mexican-style sandwiches on crispy white rolls), or pozole. A recipe for the latter is given -- along with a positive dining review -- in a framed Los Angeles Times article from the 1980s. Fans swirl the air, doors are open to the street, and cheerful oilcloths cover wooden tables at this no-frills spot across from the cathedral.
