The Garden showcases perennials hardy to South Central Alaska in several large display gardens, a pergola-enclosed herb garden and a rock garden. There's a 1-mile nature trail loop to Campbell Creek with views of the Chugach Range and a wildflower trail between the display gardens. Interpretive signs guide visitors and identify plants along the trail. Children can explore the garden with an activity-filled duffle bag 1-4 PM, Tues.-Sat. Docent tours June-Aug., 1 PM, Wed. and Sat. An information kiosk is at the entrance.

Fenced in Flowers

I'm driving for a tour company and like to get out to see different things around Anchorage where I am based. I drove to the gardens on a sunny afternoon, very easy to drive to with a car. The gardens share a parking lot with the Benny Benson Elementary School, then it is a short walk to the entrance. The whole garden is protected by a 12 foot fence, there is a sign that says you are in bear country, be aware of your surroundings. A bit intimidating! The fence also keeps the many moose out of the gardens.
The plants are beautifully laid out and maintained. The Himalayan poppies were in full bloom with red peonies. The perennial garden was superb, the herb garden was excellent. Of special merit was the labeled wildflowers of Alaska gardens. What we lower 48 residents don't realize is how much of an impact those long summer days have on the local plants and flowers. Everything was super sized, and healthy. It was also apparent that the grounds are well taken care of.
There is also a 1.5 mile nature loop through the complex, but as I was alone with no other people in the area I was nervous walking by myself. Afraid I would meet a bear or moose.
The $5 entrance fee was not enforced, it is on your honor, there is a post to insert your money, and I think it was definitely worth the small fee. Unfortunately, the nursery and gift shop closed at 4PM and I was unable to see what was available. From outside the fence it looked like there was quite a selection of plants for sale.
Highly recommend any gardener to visit, will definitely be a treat to any garden lover!
