By far Alaska's largest and most sophisticated city, Anchorage is backed by the Chugach Range to the east, and bordered by the tides of Cook Inlet and Turnagain Arm to the west and south. Anchorage is Alaska's medical, financial, and banking center and home to the executive offices of most of the Native corporations. The city has a population of roughly 261,000, nearly half the people in the state. Longtime Alaskans sometimes joke that the best thing about Anchorage is that "you can see Alaska from there," but sled-dog races are still among the most revered events held here; moose and occasionally bears roam city bike trails, and spectacular wilderness is a short drive away.
