Britt Scripps Inn

Fodor's Review:

A block west of Balboa Park, in prominent Banker's Hill, this inn occupies the former mansion of the Scripps newspaper family. A $6 million investment has turned the beautifully maintained 1887 Queen Anne into a stunning example of lavish Victorian decor. The carved oak woodwork shines throughout and the two-story stained-glass window is magnificent. In the nine guest rooms, antique beds with monumental headboards, claw-foot tubs, rain-head showers, heated towel racks, plush robes, and high-thread-count linens spell old-fashioned luxury, while high-tech updates such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and multi-line phones are artfully hidden. Rates include a full American breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese in the parlor. Stroll the grounds to visit the first camphor tree in North America, planted in 1865. A 10-minute walk across Cabrillo Bridge places you in Balboa Park.
