Zoos / Aquariums, Downtown
Fodor's Review:
With more than 8 million gallons of water, this wildly popular attraction is the world's largest aquarium. The 550,000-square-foot building, an architectural marvel resembling the bow of a ship, has tanks of various sizes filled with more than 100,000 underwater creatures. Dramatic white beluga whales, a favorite with many visitors, share an 800,000 gallon tank. Massive whale sharks Ralph, Alice, Norton, and Trixie swim in the 6.2-million-gallon Ocean Voyager Gallery, the world's largest indoor marine exhibit. The aquarium is slowly growing a living coral reef that is home to a variety of brightly colored fish. But everything you see here doesn't have gills; there are also penguins, sea lions, sea otters, river otters, sea turtles, and giant octopi. Hoards of kids -- and many adults -- can always be found around the six touch tanks. A cartoon show featuring Deepo, the aquarium mascot, is an extra $6. One-hour behind-the-scenes tours are $50. Cafe Aquaria serves sandwiches, salads, and other light fare. There are often huge crowds, so arrive early or late for the best chance of getting a close-up view of the exhibits. Purchase tickets at least a week ahead. Online ticketing is best, as you are e-mailed tickets you can print out at home.
