$$-$$$$, Southern, Downtown

Fodor's Review:

A posh power-lunch spot in Atlanta, City Grill has made the most of its grand location -- at the top of a sweeping double marble staircase -- in the elegantly renovated historic Hurt Building. Get a load of the hand-painted murals depicting a magical forest. An extensive wine list accompanies the menu, which includes a variety of hickory-grilled meats. Desserts range from peach cobbler to key lime parfait to Coca-Cola cake.

3 strikes...we left

Posted by chris from Naples, FL on 1/22/06

My husband and I planned a weekend trip to Atlanta to see the new Aquarium (very cool, but crowded). We arrived a bit early for our 7:30 reservations and were led to our table: a 6-top that had been split by 4 inches into a 4-top and a 2-top. Since we were planning on having a romatic (and expensive) dinner, I was really hoping for a bit more intimacy. I asked for an open 2-top, but was informed that the table was broken so they were trying not to use it. We hadn't even placed our drink order and our adjoining table was seated. (Many other tables in the restaurant were open). At this point, we were already disappointed, since all we could hear were the next table's conversations. We proceeded to order the cheese plate as an appetizer, and both decided on the seared sesame tuna special as our entree. We didn't understand why a plate of cheese took so long...until our entrees came out. The cheese had been forgotten. Oh well, at least dinner had arrived. We each took a bite, looked at each other and said "something's wrong with this fish." The tuna tasted like the scent of the ocean during red tide (dead fish scent...not good). At that point, we were just done. My husband discretely spoke to our very polished server, and informed him that we were leaving. We paid $25 for a glass of wine, a beer and a nice tip. It was worth it just to leave. By the way, the management never even visited us after we expressed our dismay at the evening. AVOID THIS PLACE!!

Manager needs lesson in Southern hospitality

Posted by Jamie from Washington, DC on 1/4/06

I did not actually dine at this restaurant, but if given the chance I wouldn't. I made reservations through the restaurant's on-line system. When I arrived at my reservation time after traveling across town in the rain, the restaurant was closed. I called the manager who had quite the "not my fault" attitude. Obviously there was nothing he could do, but he was unapologetic, and did not even offer to reschedule my reservation. In fact, he seemed annoyed I was calling him (from outside the restaurant in the rain). No Southern hospitality at City Grill!
