Brown's Beach House at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii

$$$-$$$$, Contemporary, Kohala Coast

User Rating: **** 3.8

Fodor's Review:

This waterfront wonder is well worth the splurge -- the menu is inventive (but not too inventive), and the wine list is excellent. Though you can order steak here, the seafood is really where it's happening. Their crab-crusted ono is a little piece of heaven, sitting on clouds of wasabi mashed potatoes. Leave room for dessert; the sweets change regularly, but they're always worth the indulgence. Local musicians play nightly on the grassy knoll outside.

Always Enjoy Brown's

Posted by JenAWalker from Santa Rosa, CA on 5/18/08

My husband and I were married on the Big Island and held our wedding dinner at Brown's. It was truly a special night. We now have a vacation home on the Kohala Coast, and always plan a sunset dinner at Brown's when we are visiting.

Oh no there's no Ono!!

Posted by KathiRose from New Jersey on 2/16/07

My husband and I had dinner on January 31, 2007. I was a little skeptical based on the previous revues in this section but we LOVED it. The restaurant sits right on the water - it must be a gorgeous view during the day. The service was informative and attentive. We went specifically because I wanted the crab crusted Ono - this is now made with another fish (which name escapes me at the moment). I had the tuna and my husband the steak - both were very good. The chocolate cake is to die for!

Casual Diner left to sit?

Posted by Charles from Georgia on 3/9/06

While the atmosphere at Brown's is wonderful, and the food was very good and priced accordingly, our waiter seemed to be more focused on two other tables of "known" people. His attention to their needs was very apparant as we had to flag him down or sit waiting while others needs were attended to. It did appear that this was not the case with other wait staff so maybe we just drew the short straw? All-in-all, a good dining expierence except for the service.

Slow Service, High Prices

Posted by Rachel from Tulsa on 1/19/06

I have agree with another comment--if it weren't for conventions and people on expense accounts, this place would go out of business. We ate lunch here one day--a tiny salad was $12. The food was good but way overpriced. The setting is beautiful, but only worth so much. The least expensive glass of red wine was $12. And although the waiter was very nice, service was incredibly slow. I would not go back.
