$$$$, Honolulu
Fodor's Review:
Hidden away in the wealthy residential neighborhood of Kahala (on the other side of Diamond Head from Waikiki), this elegant oceanfront hotel has played host to both presidents and princesses as one of Hawaii's very first luxury resorts. The Kahala is flanked by the exclusive Waialae Golf Links and the Pacific Ocean -- surrounding it in a natural tranquillity. Pathways meander out along a walkway with benches tucked into oceanfront nooks for lazy viewing. The oceanfront Chi Fitness Center offers outdoor yoga and Pilates. The reef not far from shore makes the waters here calm enough for young swimmers to try their water wings. You can also sign up for dolphin interactions in the 26,000-square-foot-lagoon. Rooms combine touches of Asia and old Hawaii, with mahogany furniture, teak parquet floors, hand-loomed area rugs, local art, and grass-cloth wall coverings. Culinary buffs should inquire if the Kahala Culinary Academy is in session. Here you can learn everything from cooking basics to party planning in classes taught by master chefs. If you plan to visit the second week of January and love golf, ask for a view of the course so you can have a bird's eye view of the PGA Sony Open from your lanai.
