Hotel Burnham

$$$, The Loop

User Rating: ***** 4.5

Fodor's Review:

. Making creative use of a city landmark, this hotel is housed in the famed 13-story Reliance Building, which D.H. Burnham & Company built in 1895. The refurbished interior retains such original details as Carrara marble wainscoting and ceilings, terrazzo floors, and mahogany trim. Guest rooms, which were once the building's offices, are compact. But we'll overlook the lack of wiggle room thanks to perks like the "pillow library," which offers anything from firm to hypoallergenic pillows. On the ground floor, the intimate Atwood Cafe has a stylish mahogany bar and serves contemporary American fare, including its popular potpies.

Loved It!

My wife and I spent a few days at The Burnham to celebrate our anniversary and it was the perfect spot. We booked a small suite, and while the room was fairly small it was well appointed and the view was great. From one window we looked up State Street toward the Chicago Theatre. From the other, we looked down Washington toward Millenium Park. The building itself is something to behold. More than 100 years old, The Reliance Building plays and important role in the history of Chicago architeture. Perhaps most impressive however, is the service at the Burnham. From the minute you check in, the staff greets you by name and asks if there is anything you need. I've never had better service anywhere. A wonderful place to visit if you have the chance.

Intimate setting= TINY room

Hotel itself was lovely! Front desk/doorman were extrememly helpful and friendly. The hotel itself was very, very beautiful but very, very tiny. Everything from the lobby to the actual room was small. It was very beautiful but if your looking for some space to lay out papers or just relax; you might want to look elsewhere. I did like staying at the Burnham but I only wish the room was larger.

Outstanding Chicago value

My wife and I have stayed at the Burnham 3 times and found it consistently excellent. Pleasant, colorful rooms; very interesting building; friendly and helpful staff; good restaurant. We have reservations over Labor Day weekend to take in the Tutankhamen exhibition at the Field Museum. The Burnham is the best upscale value in Chicago.
