Chef and owner Ana Sortun is one of the city's culinary treasures -- and so is Oleana. Here, flavors from all over the Middle Eastern Mediterranean sing loud and clear, in the hot, crispy fried mussels starter, and in the smoky eggplant puree beside tamarind-glazed beef. Fish gets jacked up with Turkish spices, then grilled until it just barely caramelizes. In warm weather, the back patio is a hidden piece of utopia -- a homey garden that hits the perfect note of casual refinement.

Food that Transports to Paradise

Ana Sortun uses spices most of us don't have on our pantry shelves to create dishes that are memorable. Creative menu with plenty of fish ad meat dishes.
Whipped feta with peppers and spices a greatv starter with bowls of tiny olives. Tamarind short ribs were unbelievable, sweet and tangy glaze on meat that fell off the bone. Grouper in parchment was fragrant with spices and sole just delicious. THE dessert to have is Baked Alaska with coconut ice cream. Unbelievably good. Two can share. A special occasion place to go every week - of your pocketbook can afford it! Good wine list.

A terrible Disappointment
Posted by Daniloukate from Inman Sq and Ireland on 9/15/07
I went for dinner with my husband on Wednesday 13th Sept. We have just moved into the Inman Sq area and had been told wonderful things about this restaurant. My husband seemed happy enough with his meal but I ordered what was meant to be a squid dish, with one piece of squid in the entire bowl. My fish was not goo and the waitress was very patronizing and austere with us...she even CORRECTED my husband's pronunciation when he ordered a bottle of the Rioja. We both grew up in Europe, this never even happened to us in France!! The whole meal was over $160 and to be honest, if the food had been even half as good as we were told, it would have been worth the snooty waitress and large bill. However, it wasn't and even though we will pass it everyday going into work, that is the closest we will ever be to this restaurant's doors ever again. A Terrible Disappointment.
