$$-$$$, Kenmore Square
Fodor's Review:
Many of the suites in this four-story, 19th-century brownstone are thematically decorated; one evokes rustic Italy, another is inspired by neo-Gothic art. Among the many amenities -- including gas fireplaces, wet bars, VCRs, CD players, and private voice mail -- the enormous bathrooms with oversize tubs and separate showers are the most appealing. Even the staircase (there is no elevator) is extraordinary: a 19th-century wallpaper mural, El Dorado, wraps along the walls. Trompe-l'oeil paintings and murals by local artist Michael Ernest Kirk decorate the common spaces. Another nice touch: free passes to the Museum of Fine Arts and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Pros: Elegant suites are lush and spacious; gas fireplaces are in all the rooms; helpful, friendly staff. Cons: May be too fussy for some; there's no elevator or handicapped access.
