Museums / Galleries, Downtown
Fodor's Review:
Most children have so much fun here that they don't realize they're actually learning something. Creative hands-on exhibits demonstrate scientific laws, cultural diversity, and problem solving. After completing a massive 23,000 square-foot expansion in 2007, the museum has updated a lot of its old exhibitions and added new ones, like the aptly named "Adventure Zone." Some of the most popular stops are also the simplest: bubble-making machinery, the two-story climbing maze, and "Boats Afloat," where children can float wooden objects down a 28-foot-long model of the Fort Point Channel. At the Japanese House you're invited to take off your shoes and step inside a two-story silk merchant's home from Kyoto. The "Boston Black" exhibit stimulates dialogue about ethnicity and community while children play in a Cape Verdean restaurant and the "African Queen Beauty Salon." In the toddler "Smith Family PlaySpace," children under three can run free in a safe environment. There's also a full schedule of special exhibits, festivals, and performances.
