Wrought-iron railings, crown moldings, and decorative plasterwork speak of the elegance of 1924, when the Francis Marion was the largest hotel in the Carolinas. Bountiful throw pillows and billowy curtains add flair to the guest rooms, many of which have views of Marion Square. Some are small, however. Flavorful Lowcountry cuisine is served at the Swamp Fox.

We had reservations for 4, but they gave our room away - in spite of it being held with a credit card - before we arrived and had only a room with one bed. They offered to put us up at a hotel outside of town, which conflicted with our in town plans. So, 2 of us slept on the floor (no, they had no rollaways or anything to offer us). And, there was no discount or anything. They said that other guests without reservations from the night before "refused to leave" our room and they couldn't make them leave. Based on this, I believe it negates any reservation system they have - they can't guarantee anyone a room.

The rooms are average, but clean and comfortable. Service provided by the hotel staff stands out in a crowd. The location is also good as it is just a short walk to most of the downtown attractions/activities.
